Questlove

I respect Questlove as a musician and DJ.

I'm also amazed at where and how often Questlove's name appears in credits. I discovered he played on Mark Ronson's Version and did a good chunk of production for Al Green's Lay it Down.

I was fortunate to have found a copy of his Babies Making Babies CD. They are a compilation of his favorite quiet storm/slow jams. I was pleased to see Gino Vannelli’s The Wheels Of Life on the track listing. There are two volumes and one still escapes me at this present time.

I took a chance and caught one of his sets at a club I didn't expect him or myself to be at years ago. He blew my mind!

At one point in the set, he played hip hop tracks and brought in the originals from which the samples came from. I was giddy like a child on Christmas. I remember him playing originals to Nas, A Tribe Called Quest and possibly Mobb Deep classics.

The most unforgettable part of the night was when he played Smells Like Teen Spirit and Seven Nation Army back to back. People went nuts because they didn't expect him to play those songs. It took a few years for me to realize The Roots were on the same label as Cobain before his death. At that moment, I learned to not underestimate the power of rock music.

I believe my tradition of walking with the CD booklets of performers I catch shows of and hope that I bring them back home signed started that Questlove night. On that night, I brought all of The Roots booklets I owned to be signed with the exception of Things Fall Apart. I either didn’t buy a copy yet or didn’t know where the CD was.

Questlove made another visit to Montreal afterwards and I made up for missing out on the Things autograph.

At present, I have the most autographs from Questlove over any other figure in hip hop or otherwise. That says and means a lot to me.
