The Suite Delight Best Shows & Events 2014

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and that means Best of 2014 lists are going to spring out of everywhere.

I'm no different.  Previous years have taught me my lessons and I'm actually posting my lists earlier than usual.

Below is my list of the shows & events, Montreal or otherwise, that marked my 2014.

Puces Pop Record Fair

Truth be told, I look forward to the Puces Pop Record Fair most at Pop Montreal time.
2014 was the year I finally got to spin for the fellow crate-diggers, music connoisseurs and collectors, record store owners, various vendors and passersby alike that congregate at the church every year for Pop Montreal weekend.

DJ Afrika Bambaataa - Under Pressure International Graffiti Convention

I have been hoping for something this year as enriching and memorable as visiting the Afrika Bambataa Records Archive last year.  I began browsing upcoming New York events and websites but it appeared my run with Bambaataa wasn't over.  Instead of my going to New York for something Bambataaesque, Under Pressure brought Bambaataa to Montreal.   I commemorated this year with one of the hip hop pioneers responsible for me DJing in the first place.   The 8tracks mix I made from songs of my DJ set can be heard here:

Le Bleury 2nd Anniversary

I was very excited to announce my spinning at the Le Bleury 2nd Anniversary party in June.  It was my first ever opportunity to spin a great dose of music on vinyl for the appreciative crowd at Le Bleury.

DJ Nu-Mark, DJ Illo, Mat The Alien, DJ Pump & Vinyl Ritchie @ Blue Dog Motel

That night of DJing was a great lead in to 2014 and set the tone for what I aimed to see and hear for the rest of it.

Filling In For CKUT's The Goods

Filling in for The Goods is a privilege and pleasure.  My next time to fill in will be December 23 from 2pm-4pm on CKUT 90.3FM.  Below is the playlist from the April fill-in.

Lost Heroes (Robert Ouimet, Pat Boogie & Christian Pronovost) - Piknic Électronik

I had Pat Boogie mixtapes and seen him spin at clubs on Saint-Laurent Boulevard.  The legend of Robert Ouimet has become more and more evident as of late and the most recent Christian Pronovost DJs sets I've caught have a nasty habit of appearing on The Suite Delight year-end best of lists.  2014 was no different.

Record Store Day 2014

It might be obvious that I looked forward to Record Store Day 2014.  Record Store Day fell on Easter weekend and I was in Toronto to celebrate both.
Montreal Comiccon

I devoted one day at Comiccon to tackle my comic book want-list and photographing.

Donnell Rawlings

The fact Donnell Rawlings would perform live at Montreal's Le Petit Olympia made being there a foregone conclusion for a fantastic night of much needed comedy.

Stones Throw: Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton

From the moment I learned of it, I hoped to see the Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records) documentary sooner rather than later. Montreal's Rialto Theater made it possible in March.

Queens Creation

The good people of Under Pressure organized a Montreal female hip hop/urban culture showcase during the Wellington Street sidewalk sale in the Verdun borough.

Nas: Time is Illmatic

The Nas: Time is Illmatic documentary screened during Pop Montreal at Concordia University's Cinéma J.A. de Sève in the J.W. McConnell building.
Spinning @ Hip-Hop Café with DJ Bruxo

I was thrilled to have been asked to join DJ Bruxo for a set at Hip Hop Cafe and was even more so have had the chance to spin there.  I hope 2015 provides another opportunity for me to spin at the cafe.

Bonobo - Pop Montreal

I finally got to buy a vinyl copy of Black Sands in addition to him throwing down a great set.
