The Cholo Cassette Concept

Cholo is the boombox enthusiast I mentioned in my post about legendary hip hop photographer Martha Cooper.

It was quite fitting that it was her signature on his boombox that would inform me of her being in Montreal and dictate my actions of seeking to meet her myself.  It was also quite fitting that his text message informing me of where I could find her made my meeting her that afternoon and that post possible.

Cholo and I share a passion and love for hip hop culture and it shows in perhaps not so subtle ways.

Although my interest in boombox culture may not be as profound, it is specifically the cassette culture where Cholo and I meet.

Cholo had posted a photo similar to the ones accompanying this post a while ago.  It was another of his Facebook profile photos of hip hop cassettes that reminded me to put an idea to use.

It stands to reason that since The Suite Delight Radio Show recently changed its timeslot   that I would act on the inspiration by spinning some to old school hip hop.  Now the timing couldn't be any better.

Coincidence or not, my range for old school hip hop music extends up to 1999.  Unless I'm mistaken, there were no more hip hop cassettes in production after that year.  If they were, they may not be of much interest to myself and don't earn the title of old school.

Thank you to Waahli “Wyzah” Yussef, Cholo & Lexis for the 90's Hip Hop Tape Cassette Exhibition inspiration and photographs.

The Suite Delight June 21 radio show playlist features old school hop hip artists featured in Cholo & Lexis' cassette collections that I saw during the 90's Hip Hop Tape Cassette Exhibition
