The Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun (RCA, 1972)

It has taken days after Jimmy Castor’s death and for me to start writing this post to realize it.

As a boy, I saw his name on my close friend’s sister’s Troglodyte 7”. I didn’t know who or what his Bunch was. I knew less of what a Troglodyte was but probably could’ve pronounced it properly, if I dare say so.

If his single It’s Just Begun, or a cover of it, played in either Breakin’ or Beat Street, I heard it but did not know who sang it.

It would take the late 90s/early 2000s for me to put a face to the name Jimmy Castor. Around that time, most of my Montreal crate digging/DJ peers and I were exploring and learning sample sources and I heard the name Jimmy Castor Bunch spoken in many a conversation. It was not until I got my hands on Rhino's The Everything Man CD compilation that I understood the importance of his music and the song It's Just Begun.

I remember the mythical It’s Just Begun album hanging on the wall of a prominent Montreal record store and metaphorically speaking, I felt it was out of my reach. The price tag was more than I was prepared to pay for any album at the time, especially one that I knew little about other than its legendary status in hip hop history. One day I got the nerve to actually take the record off the shelf and hold it so that I could at least say I got that close to the album and its cuts. Fate was good to me years later when I was able to get my own copy at an inviting price.

For whatever reason, Santana’s early work on his first 3 albums comes to mind when I hear the It’s Just Begun album. I learned from the Rhino records compilation that Castor recorded a great deal of music with Latin rhythms. It would come as no surprise that elements of psychedelic rock, soul, funk and Latin grooves runs deep throughout that album. The album found a home in early 70s New York at the genesis of the hip hop movement.

Jimmy Castor’s legacy is that he recorded one of hip hop’s most important songs and albums. He made us dance, laugh and sometimes do both at the same time. From my childhood of not knowing who he was to now blogging about his passing, he was always there where hip hop is concerned. Jimmy Castor laid the grooves for future generations to groove to and will be missed dearly.

In 2006, I returned to CJLO after being away for nearly five years.

I believe the Christmas party of that year at Concordia University's Hive was my first time playing live for my peers or a general audience.

Anyone that knows me well enough knows I used to write my playlists weeks to months in advance back then. I even did that for my playlist of that Christmas party set. I recently found a printing of the set list I created for that night and thought it would be good to post it here.
The paper will be recycled but the memories of that night will be immortalized now.

New Santigold Single - "Big Mouth"

My prayers have been answered.

I was on Twitter and recently asked when will there be a new Santigold album for us to partake in. Someone replied that I wouldn't have to wait too long but that wasn't reassuring.

Fast-forward to this week when I just got word there's a new single and video for her out now.

Santigold, Spank Rock, Amanda Blank & Trouble Andrew - Metropolis, 2009

Even though I'm a born and raised Montrealer, I have always had a special place in my heart for Brooklyn, New York. Memories of travelling to get there for shopping and visiting family are as vivid to me as if they happened yesterday. That said, I identify vicariously with any hip hop song or artist that makes reference to Brooklyn.

I have missed Santigold's previous Montreal performances and did not want to miss the June 4 show at Metropolis. In retrospect, I really must not have wanted to miss it because I was at the venue nearly an hour before show time. The goal was to be there early enough to catch the show and to buy a copy of either Santogold or opening act Amanda Blank's music in the lobby. To my disappointment and possibly others, the only music available for purchase was other opening act Trouble Andrew.

I have seen Amanda Blank's name on blogs for months but finally got to hear her music. Her
lyrics were not very audible, but the sexual inneundo and gyrations were loud and clear. I can well imagine just how graphic the lyrics are when I get around to hearing her recorded material.

Trouble Andrew performed next with an original and unusual set. I had not heard of them before, but discovered Santigold recorded a song with them when I visited the booth where their merchandise was sold. I was hoping they would perform the song live for us, but it did not happen. The crowd enjoyed Trouble Andrew as did I, in anticipation of Santigold.

After Trouble Andrew's set, I ran into a former classmate who I had run into previously at another concert. He said what most have said about Santigold. He said that her debut was one of the best releases of 2008 and named individual tracks he was anticipating to hear live.

My former classmate and I were not the only ones eagerly awaiting Santigold's appearance on stage. The crowd nearly went into a frenzy upon seeing her. Her attire was reminiscent of late 1980s Golden Era Hip Hop. It was as if she were bringing the essence of Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte and Roxanne Shante to the present day or at least paying tribute to them.

On the subject of songs waiting for to be performed, Anne was on the short list of what I burned and yearned to hear. Amazingly, the live performance was as chilling as the recorded version. That made me realize how and why she packed Metropolis that night. Say Aha made everyone go wild! L.E.S. Artistes was my introduction to her music and was nice to experience live.

The song I waited for the most, that made my 2008 Best-Of list, that starts with the four magic words "Brooklyn, We Go Hard" that Jay-Z used to help make more of an anthem is Shove It. When I heard the song for the first time, it solidified my interest and respect for Santigold for many reasons. The production of the song is incredible and the vocal delivery is spellbinding. Lastly, the first four words of the song have become etched into hip hop history by a not necessarily a hip-hop artist from Brooklyn.

Merci Morburn Music

Morburn Music has a lot to do with the blog you’re reading now.

At a time when I was disillusioned and frustrated about the stagnant status of my blog, they asked me to write for them which in turn inspired me continue writing again. They graciously made room for me on their website and I've been informed the recent Ice-T article I submitted to them continues to be read by many a Morburn visitor.

I will be exploring their website for tracks to play on upcoming editions of The Suite Delight.

Morburn did what their moniker stands for. It lit a fire under my ass and got me writing more than I ever have in my life. Now it's time for me to return the favor...

Donny Hathaway (1945 – 1979)

Years ago, after my first listening of Donny Hathaway Live, I learned he had one of the best voices in soul music history. My recent listening of his debut CD painfully proved what I already knew.

I don’t care much for Live albums but Donny Hathaway Live is one of the best live albums I’ve ever heard in league with James Brown, The Isley Brothers and Curtis Mayfield. His beautiful version of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy makes one mourn both of their losses.

One night while “grocery shopping” (browsing record/CD stores with the sole intent of walking out with music), I noticed one of my favourite stores had a copy of Everything is Everything at a price I could not resist.

The CD is wonderfully smooth and earned my playing it again after the first listen just to hear I Believe it to My Soul again surrounded by its accompanying tracks. I had intentions of playing I Believe it to My Soul during my November 26 Suite Delight show with J.R. Ewing and Wainiac but opted to leave the CD home. It appeared I Believe it to My Soul was on J.R. Ewing’s mind as well because as we discussed on air, it too was a standout for him and among his choices for that night’s playlist.

The liner notes have Joel Dorn claiming Donny’s debut is his best album. I had been leaning more towards Live but I might be inclined to agree with him. I still have his Extensions of a Man to discover, among others, and who knows if those will also shift my opinion.

Regardless of which album Dorn, J.R. Ewing or I feel is his best, what is agreed upon is that Hathaway was a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

Ode to a Boombox

I was having breakfast at a restaurant near my place and Simple Minds’ Don’t You Forget About Me, played on the radio. My mind went to the Brat Pack, Breakfast Club and the boombox I used to record the song off the radio in 1985.

The picture above is of the first boombox I ever owned, RT-SX1, and the beginnings of my customer loyalty to the Toshiba brand. I forgot for which occasion I received it but the memories associated with it are vivid.

My next memory was of summer 1986. The late Robert Palmer had hit #1 with Addicted to Love but for the life of me, I could NEVER record the song from the radio. It was the only song that really eluded me and the heat from the video (!) made it all the more imperative I have it.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon and I was outside. I believe it was a passing car with the opening bars of the song blasting from the speakers that caused me to run into the house, to my room and to my trusty Toshiba. In the midst of trying to find the channel it MIGHT have been playing on, I realized that I was not prepared to record the song. When I did cue up the tape, I was at the midway mark of the song. As fate would have it, that was the only time I recorded any of Addicted to Love from radio.

I loved that boombox so much that I drew a large-scale version of it for a school project. While completing the project, I imagined the boombox was larger than the Bristol board in front of me and that the little wind produced by the speakers was gale-force. Similar to X-Men 3 Wolverine slowly and steadily approaching the Dark Phoenix, I was the only one that could bravely step to the boombox to turn the tape over. Naturally, the hurricane wind from the speakers was not blowing away any of my schoolmates. They wouldn’t be able to dance to Shalamar if that were the case.

Only those that owned it or know of the model will follow me on this. I heard and knew of mono. I also heard and knew of stereo. My trusty Toshiba allowed me to play music in both and even Stereo Wide! To me as a pre-teen, it meant my songs would be louder and better sounding. In retrospect, it added more mid to the music.

There were 2 faults I had with my trusty boombox. The black door for the cassette player did not properly notify me of how much tape time I had when recording. I would need a flashlight or take the tape out after recording to estimate whether the next hot song on the radio will be recorded in its entirety. Although my need and ability to dub would emerge years later, the next fault was that it was a single cassette player.

What my Toshiba could do, however, is detach so that the speakers can be placed at two different places. Now that was surround sound if I ever heard it.

My Toshiba boombox gave me a means of exploring, developing and appreciating music at that young age. The ability to tape music from the radio seemed out-of-this world great to me and an inexpensive means of having the top songs of the day at my fingertips. At 10 years old or so, I taped nearly everything I could off the radio because those songs formed my musical knowledge and I had nothing else to compare or judge them against.

I’ve seen music formats graduate from vinyl, 8-tracks, cassettes and CDs to the unseen mp3 in my lifetime. I guess the nostalgia of the 80s, triggered by the Simple Minds song, brought me back to my wonder years. Twenty-something odd years later, I’ve managed to realize the childhood dream of hosting a radio show that incorporates elements from my boombox recording days to modern manipulation of music.

I’m aware there is a boombox culture and I respect those that participate. If I didn’t already have my hands full with trying to make people realize my Suite Delight show is the only solution for radio in Montreal, this blog and dealing with the daily real-to-real, I would have joined the ranks of many seeking Clairtone and Lasonic model music players.

The Suite Delight Salutes the States

A little birdy recently told me that The Suite Delight gets a lot of love from the United States.

At present, Kansas, California, Texas and North Carolina appear to be most content with whatever I’m serving up.

If there are any hip, cool cats in the United States that want a monthly set or even one night of DJ Solespin’s Suite Delight goodness at a happening venue, please don’t hesitate to contact me. The pleasure would be all mine to rock a crowd of Americans.

Souls of Mischief - 93 Til Infinity (1993)

Groups like Souls of Mischief and The Pharcyde intrigued me a lot back in the day.
How could all of those MCs sounds so East Coast but come from the same place as NWA, DJ Quik, Too Short and E-40?

Any MC sounding like what I came to know and love as the East Coast sound had me from the opening bars of their track regardless of where they came from.

When I first heard That’s When Ya Lost, I couldn’t wait to know the crew name, where in New York they were from and when their album was going to drop. Their vibe was almost as crazy as A Tribe Called Quest's Scenario and I was hooked. Instead, I found out they were down with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, meaning they were from California. Once I got over that shock, I waited for more tracks to see what else they could do.

On a 1993 school trip to New York & Washington D.C., I bought Souls' Never No More cassette single, along with Gang Starr's Mass Appeal.

In the early 90s, I was crazy for hip hop remixes and still am. Souls of Mischief remixes rank among my most highly sought after. Their That's When Ya Lost 12" sparked my interest in the group and the remix is quite interesting as well. I never owned a copy of that 12" single but always wanted to. Therefore, the fire and desire to obtain more Souls sounds grew.

Word is I missed a hot concert when they performed in Montreal with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. I don't need rumors or speculation to know that would be a great show. That too probably caused me to seek more Souls afterwards to make up for what I missed that night. I did catch Souls of Mischief at Les Foufounes Electriques years later and got to meet the group members afterwards.

In the late 90s/early 2000s, I was on a self-imposed hiatus from hip hop but kept an eye and ear open for what was happening. I naturally checked up on the Hieroglyphics' moves and silently supported them from wherever I was perched. From discovering the group to blogging about them years later, it is clear that Souls of Mischief's impact will stay with me until infinity.

The Suite Delight's Best of 2011 Lists

If Dinah Washington’s classic What a Difference a Day Makes were remixed/updated to What a Difference a Year Makes, it would be my theme song.

2011 was a pivotal year in my life. Most of whatever I have thought, done, said and believed got turned inside out and upside down to the point that I still don’t know quite how to deal with the new reality before me. A lot of doors that were closed to me opened this year and literally the vice versa occurred as well. 2011 presented me with incredible highs as well as some lows but I have persevered and will continue to do so.

Unlike past years, I had slight difficulty in compiling this year’s lists. Many factors could have been at play. Like I stated before, my perceptions of things, as well as tolerance level, changed this year. Perhaps my quality control was higher and less would impress me. Maybe there truly was less this year to impress me. Regardless, I squeezed out some 2011 standouts and setbacks for the lists below.

Top Hip Hop Singles 2011

Shad – Flawless

It seems Shad can’t fail and the title of the song is apropos.

Jay Z & Kanye West – Otis

I admit to not knowing one lyric or line of Otis and I don’t intend to anytime soon. What I do know is that Otis’ beat is banging and anyone rhyming on it could get overshadowed by the raw, soulful Redding sample. The idea that it was necessary for juggernauts Jigga and West to team up is up for debate but I won’t argue about Otis’ finished product.

Pusha T – Trouble on my Mind

If The Clipse didn’t do so much of what they’re known for, I might like them more than I do. Even though I’ve taken them in small doses over the years, I always acknowledged and respected the two rhyme rippers’ talents. Trouble on my Mind has me wanting more Pusha T solo music now.

Evidence – You

Dilated Peoples emerged as somewhat last hopes for hip hop in the early 2000s for me.
I followed their individual careers to learn that Evidence was not only an MC but a producer as well. You, the Premier-produced track, is a standout on his Cats & Dogs full-length release.

Conn-Shawnery – Takes 2/2 Tango

To my surprise one Saturday evening, I found out Conn Shawnery paid a visit to CJLO’s The Limelight on the heels of releasing his CS01 album this year. During a water break, there was a banging beat from the speakers and I commented as such. He told me he made the banger in question! The video is just as nuts.

Beastie Boys – Make Some Noise

Speaking of music videos being nuts, this special guest-heavy video made me realize how iconic the Beastie Boys are.

L.E.S. – Lion's Den feat. Loss One, SRH & DJ Crowd

Like D-Shade, Montreal hip hop needs a full-length L.E.S. release as soon as possible.

Best Albums 2011

Charles Bradley – No Time For Dreaming

No Time for Dreaming was the album I was waiting for since Charles Bradley performed at the Daptone Records CMJ 2009 Showcase. I played it on The Suite Delight more often than any other album in 2011.

Jill Scott – The Light of the Sun

I was relieved and surprised Jill Scott returned with a new album in 2011. My love for her and her talent has her any list I compile at any time of the year.

Miguel Migs – Outside the Skyline

I always meant to study more Miguel Migs music. When I learned he was dropping a new album this year and it landed in my hands, I knew it was my time to finally get familiar. Outside the Skyline is a party waiting to happen.

Flying Down Thunder & Rise Ashen – One Nation

Rise Ashen’s album with Ammoye was my introduction and I would later learn he has been producing quality electronic music for years. Although the Ammoye album was more dancehall to cater to her culture, Ashen is very versatile at making beats as this album proves.

Introducing Slim Moore & The Mar-Kays

With the exception of The Souljazz Orchestra and a very few others, Canada is not necessarily known for present-day funk bands. When I learned that some SJO personnel were involved with this project, I was all the more convinced it was going to be good.

Syleena Johnson – Chapter V: Underrated

I had been wondering what Syleena Johnson had been up to since her last album and found out she would have an album for 2011. Johnson is one of my favourite current R&B vocalists and just in time to find herself on this list.

D-Shade – The Water Principle

I’ve been waiting years for Montreal’s unsung hip hop hero D-Shade to release a full-length album and he finally delivered.

The Franco Proietti Morph-Tet – Like The Shore is to the Ocean

I promised the Bongo Beat Records head honcho that I would make good use of the latest Franco Proietti Morph-Tet album. I did not expect the bombastic blast which is Montreal. I’m always happy to hear Jonathan Emile but for him to be joined by D-Shade on the mic is a double dose of danger. That song makes me even more proud to be from Montreal.

Toro Y Moi – Freaking Out EP

I’ve known the name Toro Y Moi for about 2 years but perceived his music as more alternative than I would be prepared to explore. The Onomatopoeia Show’s Cartoon Gal told me about him covering Cherrelle’s classic Saturday Love and I chucked those preconceived notions out the window. If an alternative artist knew and interpreted that track, then I was going to give it a go.

Katy Perry – Teenage Dream

E.T. is one of my favourite songs of 2011 and of Katy Perry’s music to date. I’m a bit surprised to list her album but considering that almost a half-dozen singles from the album were supremely successful, it would be folly to omit her.

Top Singles 2011

Duck Sauce – Barbra Streisand

Duck Sauce’s Anyway is a great track. Their Barbra Streisand is even better. It is one of the best dance tracks I’ve heard in years. It is perfection.

Flo-Rida – Good Feeling

Every time I hear that song, I get a good feeling. Not too many songs can make one break out into dance at their desk. The Etta James sample is superb.

Sarah Linhares – Step Up

This groovy tune finally found its way onto the accompanying Messages from the Future album this year.

Austra – Lose It

After my first listen of this song and its remixes, I knew I was listening to an entry on my Best of 2011 list.

Deep Street Soul – Masterpiece

Deep Street Soul once again replicates the raw, soulful sound of the 1970s. This time they do a brilliant cover of the classic Clarence Reid song.

Sarah MK – Think Dat

I believe it was a newsletter from Jonathan Emile prior to the release of her debut that first made me aware of Sarah MK. The Limelight & I had the brilliant idea of requesting Sarah MK’s debut album be added to CJLO’s rotation. The album has since found itself in the top 10 of the station’s charts and even my guest Perpall Jr. squeezed Think Dat into his first Suite Delight guest DJ set.

Adele – Rolling in the Deep

Rolling in the Deep was unbelievably escapable and simply the song of the year. I would otherwise not have listed it but I admit the part of the song leading to the chorus, and even the chorus, could make me erupt in singing.

I love New York and even more shopping in the city. Be it records, CDs, DVDs or clothes, New York was good to me this year and I was good to its local economy that week.

X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class is my movie of the year.

Thor

Thor is my second favourite film of 2011. There is a scene involving him and the hammer that touched me personally and stayed with me even after leaving the movie theatre. I’m waiting to watch it at will when I add the DVD to my collection.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest

As much as I love ATCQ and enjoyed watching the documentary, I didn’t quite enjoy knowing why they broke up. I would have preferred that they stayed together and continue to produce hip hop’s greatest music. I was happy to have had the opportunity to learn why it happened and revisit their hip hop glory days.

Top Disappointments 2011

R.I.P. Jack Layton

News of Jack Layton’s death was unfortunate. I was at work and the same co-worker that made me see his sickly press conference photos told me the sad news. I, like a great number of Canadians, wish he could have been with us to be our Prime Minister one day.

I was saddened to hear Nate Dogg passed away this year and that no more will we hear him on hooks or choruses.

CMJ 2011

On many levels, CMJ 2010 was the best of my three years attending the festival. Therefore, this year’s CMJ had a lot to live up to and deliver for me. It did neither. The showcases were of artists I barely knew or heard of. As open as I am to music, the whole week’s choices of showcases were a real toss-up and I was forced to choose the best of the bunch each night. The one panel discussion I sat in on told me very little of what I didn’t already know or do. I did get some good shopping out of my time there though.

Green Lantern

I was reluctant to see the movie from the moment I heard about it. I went against my instincts and lost nearly 2 hours and $20 in the process.

Horrible Bosses

Kevin Spacey is one of my favourite actors and Jason Bateman’s work on Arrested Development still makes me laugh now when I think about it. I was hoping I’d have some laughs during the movie but it was not to be.

Sucker Punch

Vanessa Hudgens is a cutie and the main reason I went to see Sucker Punch. The combined girl power, explosions and ass-kickings provided little entertainment.

The Suite Delight's 20 Favorite Hip Hop Producers

There are of course producers missing from the list but they have not been missing from my radio show over the last 5 years. To my credit, I have made sure to add hip hop songs and artists not many at my station are either aware, possess or would reach for.

The 20 producers below are specifically those that have marked me, more than others, where hip hop music is concerned. They were influential, innovative, important and downright incredible to me in some form or another. The traces of their work can be found whenever I reach for a hip hop for my show. In most cases, they would have produced said songs.

Marley Marl

I want to thank Marley Marl for his countless years and contributions to hip hop. His classic radio program inspires me for my own The Suite Delight radio show. When I talk of golden era hip hop music, I’m referring to everything he was even remotely involved with.

DJ Premier

I was thrilled to see DJ Premier from my Gang Starr emerge as a main man for hip hop production. The list of artists he worked with outside of Gang Starr is mind-blowing. I remember Gang Starr performing in Montreal and I would have asked Primo if he produced Masta Ace’s Saturday Nite Live but I forgot to because I was probably too awe-struck from watching him sign my CD booklets. On his first appearance in Montreal years ago, I met Masta Ace at Off the Hook during an autograph signing. I didn’t forget to ask him the question because I knew my chances of getting the answer would be even slimmer afterwards. According to Ace, Primo in fact did the cuts on the cut. Whether behind the turntables or boards, I am grateful that DJ Premier has had his hands on countless classic hip hop tracks over the years.

Madlib

Just as Theo Parrish embodies everything I want to be as a DJ, Madlib embodies everything I want from a producer. His sounds are in tune with my frequency or wavelength. Like Pavlov’s dog, all I need to see and hear is his name and I’m there. His production takes me back to the wonder years of golden era hip hop when the productions were not only creative but innovative.

J Dilla

In February, I wrote in great detail about what J Dilla means to me. In a strange twist of fate, if I were to have compiled this list 10 years ago, J Dilla would not have been on it.

What a difference a death and delving into Dilla’s discography can make.

Q-Tip

Michael Rappaport’s documentary made it clear to me who was responsible for the quintessential ATCQ production on their first albums. If those albums epitomize the highest form of hip hop music ever recorded to me, then their producer must find himself on this list. I watched that documentary and reminisced about the days of discovering them. I went through Jungle Brothers and De La Soul but A Tribe Called Quest would make a special place in my heart for their music. Similar to mourning the passing of a loved one or entertainer, I miss ATCQ. I would like to believe that if they were to regroup, they could create a classic album hip hop has needed. Until then, I’m happy to hear any Q-Tip I can.

Diamond D

Diamond D is one of a select few people that symbolizes New York hip hop to me. Just like Main Source’s Breaking Atoms, an original pressing of Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop is nearly impossible for me to find or acquire and both are among the best hip hop albums ever recorded. Like most other early 90s hip hop albums, the sample choices and production of Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop are stellar.

K-Cut

As 1/3 of Main Source, K-Cut was destined to be an entry on this list. Not only is Breaking Atoms one of the best early 90s hip hop albums, it is Canadian content. At a time when Maestro Fresh-Wes, Dream Warriors and Michie Mee were breaking ground as MCs, K-Cut emerged as my country’s hip hop super-producer. An original pressing of Breaking Atoms eludes me and I have had to settle for an Atom-less 2LP reissue. I’m looking for any and all K-Cut tracks I can get my hands on.

The Large Professor

Another member of Main Source and reputable producer in his own right, Large Professor lands on this list. I admit to being devastated when I got word of the group’s split because I knew my chances of them generating more classic hip hop together were next to none. Like K-Cut, Large Professor went off on his own and crafted many 90s hip hop cuts. Akinyele’s 1993 album was produced entirely by Extra P and those beats are banging. He remixed tracks for Common, Gang Starr and many other MCs. Speaking of MCs, he is the only guest rapper to share a verse with ATCQ on their classic Midnight Marauders.

9^th Wonder

It took the second Little Brother album for me to realize his wonders. I somewhat fronted on their debut but now treasure Little Brother and 9^th’s production at a time when there’s little to grasp. I’m not familiar with the majority of his music at this time but anytime I hear one of his beats, I’m in awe. I’m possibly saving myself for a 9^th Wonder remedial course to try and catch up to the rest of the world.

DJ Muggs

DJ Muggs’ resurfacing as Cypress Hill’s DJ and producer was quite a surprise for me. I had forgotten about him as the DJ for 7A3. The blunted beats of Cypress Hill’s first 3 albums were unlike any I had heard before. They were hypnotic at a point. I’ll never forget when I heard Pigs, the first song from the Cypress Hill debut. I couldn’t believe a beat could sound like that. To top it off, the MC and Cypress subject matters were ill too. His work with House of Pain and Funkdoobiest was just as hot.

Similar to DJ Muggs and The Genius, I also forgot that RZA’s reincarnation was of a hip hop figure from my past. Ironically, all three would manage to work together in some form or fashion. RZA is widely seen and known as the production force behind the majority of Wu-Tang Clan’s musical output. If he is predominantly responsible for production on the landmark 36 Chambers and the countless classic solo Wu releases, then he surely deserves to be on this list.

The Bomb Squad

For a long time I’ve felt that Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back should be entered into school curriculums for study whether it be sociological, cultural or musical history if it hasn’t already. Be it cultural or sociological, that album deserves to be examined. I never heard production so avant-garde in my life. The Bomb Squad is aptly named because their production quality is similar to being attacked sonically by their sharp, shrill shards of sample selection. There will never be hip hop like what they created on the early Public Enemy albums as well as Ice Cube’s early solo work.

Pete Rock

In 1991, I was in New York and saw the All Souled Out EP cassette in a record store. I bought it without knowing it was released, what they looked like prior or having heard one song. I bought it because the late Heavy D said they were on stage drinking Cisco. Not much later, Pete Rock’s name was popping up on early 90s hip hop 12” singles galore for remixes. By 1992-1994, those remixes were mind-blowing and still are today. Mecca & The Soul Brother as well as The Main Ingredient are proof of how good sprawling, epic hip hop albums can be with little to no filler. In this day and age, Pete Rock’s production techniques are so varied that it can be a surprise to learn he is behind the banger you’re listening to. Pete Rock’s name gets etched onto this list.

Organized Noize

It appears we have Organized Noize to thank for the Outkast albums, especially Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. 1993-1994 was particular year because a lot of Southern rappers like Big Mike, Scarface and Outkast dropped dope albums causing me to re-evalaute my stance on non-East Coast hip hop. Outkast’s debut disc blew me away. Songs like Players’ Ball, Crumbling Herb and the title track are untouchable. Outkast’s production and sound mature on ATLiens causing some debate as to which between the debut and sophomore albums is their strongest album. When that situation presents itself, one can only acknowledge the strength of the producers. Elevators (Me & You) can get me to elevate a lighter at the sounds of the opening bars. I’ll tell you I want to cut exactly like the DJ on Wheels of Steel.

Prince Paul

Similar to discovering that Marlon Brando was the man before Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, Prince Paul’s production is the precursor to my present passion for Madlib’s music. De La Soul’s debut album literally made me who I am today and Prince Paul had a lot to do with that. I remember him as a member of Stetsasonic but still marvel at the fact he created a masterpiece like De La Soul’s debut.

Marco Polo

I’ve already stated that Port Authority is one of the best hip hop albums I’ve heard in the last 10 years. Marco Polo is responsible for every beat and has excellent taste in choosing MCs for his tracks.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist emerged as a producer I had to acknowledge in the midst of my most anti-hip hop sentiments of the early 2000s. There were too few producers making music I cared for or about and Alchemist appeared to have concocted the antidote.

DJ Spinna

Even though I was somewhat out of the game, I knew DJ Spinna was making some banging hip hop in the late 90s/early 2000s. Similar to the Pete Rock, Spinna’s BBE material went unheard but not unknown by me. This year marks the 10^th anniversary of both of the Beat Generation albums and it is evident that I’m caught up. Aside from compiling albums like Funkrock & Strange Games & Things that helped make me who I am now, my respect for him finds him on this list.

Kutmasta Kurt

Dilated Peoples’ No Retreat (Remix) is one of the best beats I’ve ever heard in my life. I wish I could rhyme over a beat like that or even produce one. I was introduced to Kutmasta Kurt within the last decade when I was returning to hip hop after my hiatus. I’m not too familiar with all of his work, but I like every beat I’ve heard from him to date.

Just Blaze

Just Blaze is one of the few producers I discovered after my hip hop hiatus that has not stopped bringing the heat. The beat he gave M.E.D. for Break It Down is one of the sickest I’ve ever heard.

Martin Perna’s passion for Afrobeat dates back to his music with Antibalas to his association with the Broadway musical Fela. Together they form Ocote Soul Sounds whose latest album featuring Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, Taurus, was released on ESL Music.

Prince - Metropolis, (June 24, 2011)

Prince at Metropolis on June 24 was my concert highlight of 2011 and one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended.

It was also the most expensive concert of my life as well. However, after Prince experience, money didn’t matter at all that night. That show was worth every penny.

I was ill-prepared when Prince made his last trip to Montreal nearly a decade or so ago.

It seemed he would breeze in and out of this city without my having seen or heard him. I remembered the show predictably selling out quickly, my inability to have obtained tickets for the show and being intimidated by the Prince ticket price tag. This year, all the stars were in alignment for me to see the superstar live in my city.

The Prince show at Metropolis lasted 4 hours that night. He made multiple returns to the stage due to the crowd’s multiple cries for encore performances.

Another element to the night was Prince being joined by legend Maceo Parker for a number of songs. Although Prince is not outright a jazz artist, I believe Maceo Parker’s saxophone was more than sufficient to compensate for whatever Prince lacked as far as performing in during this year’s Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

When Maceo Parker performed Pass The Peas, my mind went directly to James Brown. James Brown produced Parker’s Pass The Peas. Brown was instrumental (no better word) in the foundation of hip hop. He influenced Prince as well as Michael Jackson, who too is no longer with us. Seeing and hearing Maceo perform the classic track made my eyes watery. Prince was onstage with his mentor’s main man and I was watching two of my own mentors in front of me.

Speaking of Jackson, Prince squeezed in a mini-Michael tribute. Although Prince did not sing the Michael songs personally, it was well-received by the groove-hungry crowd.

Prince is scheduled to return to Montreal’s Bell Centre on December 2. I made a conscuious and slightly painless decision to not see him again in 2011. 4 hours of my life and year were spent with Prince. Heaven knows one minute of Prince, even up in the bleachers, is worth the time and money but I’ve had my fill for a while. I had the luxury of watching him in the rather intimate setting of Metropolis where I consciously suppressed the urge to walk up to the front of the stage. The gladiatorial arena which is Bell Centre won’t allow me that luxury.

To anyone that knows and loves Prince’s music and has not yet seen him perform live, must I tell you to gett off your money maker and get a ticket in bleachers, red section, blue section, middle section, floor or even outside the building to catch him?

R.I.P. Heavy D

I was briefly on Twitter after work and just as I was about to log out, I read Fashawn’s R.I.P. Heavy D tweet. The expected denial kicked in amidst the flood of tweets stating what Fashawn said. I quickly went to Wikipedia but they had nothing confirming his death. I then went to Google and there was word of his death. I returned to Twitter for even more Heavy D tweets to greet me and the sadness kicked in.

It had been a while since I thought or saw anything related to Heavy D. With the exception of passing my Big Tyme vinyl while looking for records to use on my radio show, I hadn’t played his music in a long time. I did hear him a lot while I was watching my In Living Color DVDs within the last few months.

When I learned of his death, I thought of the positivity and optimism he brought to hip hop. Who else would recruit over half a dozen of the hottest early 90s rappers for a classic posse cut called Don’t Curse of all songs? Heavy D never gave in to that or the negative elements that have surrounded the culture.

Going back to In Living Color and even Mad-TV, who else in hip hop had the vibe needed for theme songs of the two hip hop centred sketch comedy shows?

As I think about him now, I realize that he managed to bring the Jamaican roots of hip hop to the music a bit more than some of his contemporaries. As a youth, I saw music from the West Indies as old folks’ music and lacking the cool factor of anything Prince, Michael Jackson or Lionel Richie did at the time. KRS-One, Just-Ice and a handful of other Golden Era MCs chanted in their songs but they were more geared to the underground in their delivery. In the early 90s when reggae artists like Shabba Ranks, Tiger, Mad Cobra and Supercat were making more mainstream strides, Heavy D helped make it cool for me to acknowledge and appreciate the music and culture of my West Indian roots. I will be eternally grateful to Heavy D for that.

I am saddened by Heavy D’s sudden passing. He was not one I would have expected or wanted to leave us so soon.

When one reflects on his contributions to hip hop culture and the fact that he is no longer with us, one mourns the nostalgia of hip hop’s past and what-could-have-been.

Hip hop has needed some optimism and positivity for a while just as I have needed to feel optimistic and positive about it. Thankfully Heavy D’s legacy gives us a source for that anytime we want.

R.I.P. & Thank you Hevster.

The Suite Delight: Digging In The Crates with J.R. Ewing (1967-77) - November 26, 2011

This year has been pretty good for me as far as crate digging is concerned and I’ve been patiently planning to unleash some of those records on my radio show.

When I knew I was going to do a show of strictly vintage sounds, I immediately asked J.R. Ewing (my nickname for him) to join me.

Years ago when I first came up with the theme of blending late 60s/early 70s rock, soul, funk, jazz, blues, pop and reggae songs together on my show, I could barely find anyone that could guest DJ with me.

After I realized J.R. Ewing was studying and listening to the music I mentioned before and willing to co-host with me on those themed shows, I’ve enjoyed the near half-dozen shows we’ve done together.

By the way, I gave him the nickname because of the initials in his name and his tendency to serve up mean tracks when joining me on air.

I gave him specific instructions that this Saturday’s show will be strictly late 60s to late 70s music. I even threw out arbitrary years like 1967-77 to reinforce my point.

This way I get to spin some of the records I got over the last few months and let J.R. share some of his choice tracks.

Puces POP Record Fair 2011

It should come as no surprise that I love record fairs and conventions.

The excitement of finding records long sought-after or discovering that could end up being precious to my person are sensations I revel in.

I learned that I would miss the Montreal Autumn Record Convention while I would be at CMJ.

I also learned that unlike the two years prior that I've been at CMJ, there would be no WFMU Record Fair for me to scavenge.

When I think back to the Puces POP Record Fair, I have fond memories of that Saturday afternoon. I found some interesting records and didn't go too far over-budget.

The Puces POP Record Fair provides me with yet another avenue for crate digging and is the event I look forward to the most each year during Pop Montreal. I have no doubt 2012 will be just as good to me.

The Suite Delight: Perpall Jr. (November 12, 2011)

Although we are nearly a decade apart in age, Perpall Jr. & I are on the same page when it comes to music.

At the time I was discovering and building my musical education with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and Prince, Perpall Jr. was using their music while experimenting with turntables.

For many years, Jello-Bar has been the best bar/lounge in Montreal for people of my demographic and Perpall Jr. had a lot to do with that. Not only would he spin the groove sounds of yester-year but he would mix tracks of the day with them making your night out all the more enjoyable.

I've been privileged to know Perpall Jr. personally and will finally have the privilege of having him as a guest DJ on CJLO's The Suite Delight this Saturday, November 12 from 8-10pm EST.

Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) - L'Olympia, November 13, 2011

By 1998, Rawkus Records emerged as the only solution for hip hop at that time. In those darkest hours, my brightest hope was Black Star.

I always enjoyed the flavour Mos Def brought to his many guest appearances on tracks back then. By the time of his debut release, I thought he could do no wrong and indeed deliver a much needed underground hip hop classic on par with Illmatic. Black on Both Sides is indeed a classic hip hop album and remains his best to date.

Talib Kweli, the more lyrical of the two, caught my attention from the first time I heard his voice. Mind you, I didn’t know his or Mos Def’s names whenever I heard Fortified Live but fate would naturally inform me of those facts. The decision that Talib Kweli’s debut is my personal favourite of their solo albums is not one that is easy to arrive at. Both has realized their potential with classic albums with Talib’s making my Favorite Albums (2000-2010) list.

Together, their first Black Star album is what I wish more rappers aimed at creating. I tried not to abuse or overkill that album. I wanted to return to its wonder and amazement similar to the day I opened the wrapping and popped in the CD player for the first times.

On my last trip to New York of the 1990s, my crew and I saw a yet-to-release-their-album Black Star perform in a Bronx park. While watching them, I felt I was watching my future of hip hop in front of me. I believe I did in many ways.

If you agree on a number of levels that hip hop's best days have come and gone and have not yet seen Mos Def & Talib Kweli perform live solo or together, do yourself the favour and check them out November 13 at L'Olympia de Montreal. In your darkest hour, they may be the Black Star you seek.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I haven't been this free in planning my radio show's playlists in about two years. I've been able to explore music and ideas for themes now more than ever.

After weeks of preparation and scheduling, The Suite Delight October 29 playlist will be dedicated to the recording artists below that follow my Twitter account.

Recording artist or not, the invitation to follow my Twitter account is extended to all.

Not all will make it onto the playlist that night but this gives you an idea as to whose music we will hear that night and the calibre of artists that have a vested interest in my occasional 160 characters of text.

Dam Funk

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Dam Funk on Canadian soil twice. On the second occasion, I, along with CJLO, had organized a Stones Throw Records show at the defunct Saints Showbar. Since then, he’s gone on to record a cover of The Human League’s Things That Dreams Are Made Of that I consider to be the song of 2010. My tweeting that earned me Dam Funk as a follower. He is scheduled to perform at Le Belmont on October 20.

Rhymesayers

Brother Ali really impressed me at Les Foufounes Electriques. He is my gateway to the Rhymesayers record label and roster. I anticipate their latest release, including the new BK-One.

Names You Can Trust

Names You Can Trust not too long ago joined the ranks of record labels I trust. Time restraints and other artistic/musical endeavours have prevented me from exploring their catalogue but I will attend to that soon.

De La Soul

My DNA should be called De La Soul. They are among my top 5 most important hip hop acts.

B-Real

When I saw his name among my account, I almost thought it was an illusion. Regardless, I am happy Cypress Hill’s B-Real or any B that’s real is following me. The first Cypress Hill is a classic album with the second not too far behind.

Friends of Friends Music

I’m happy to be friends with Friends of Friends. Similar to Names You Can Trust, I plan to delve into their music soon as well.

DJ Vadim

Thankfully due to this electronic era I can say hello and tell artists like DJ Vadim how much I respect their music. Also, an artist like Vadim can follow me to know when I play his work.

Def Jam

The first hip hop album I ever bought on my first solo trip to downtown Montreal was a Def Jam release. For them to be among my followers is an honor I would never have dreamed.

Tommie Sunshine

I was introduced to Tommie Sunshine through Stretch Armstrong’s DJ set at last year’s Plant Music CMJ party. The Arcade Fire original and Tommie Sunshine remix are my favourite songs by the two. I look forward to exploring more Tommie Sunshine sounds in the near future.

DECON

As much as I’m critical of the current hip hop climate, I do look for certain artists and labels for product. DECON is one of labels. A good number of hip hop songs I’ve liked were affiliated with this label. They will know my affiliation to their music as I play them via Twitter.

Los Empressarios

The Fort Knox Five and Los Empressarios family have caught my ear and interest since my awareness of them over the last 2 years.

Fuijya & Miyagi

Upon my return to CJLO in 2006, I believe Fujiya & Miyagi had an album charting at the time. I remember seeing their name on the charts or in the CD room while browsing for music. Prior to my resignation as RPM Director, they released an album earlier this year. The album did well on our charts. It is safe to say Fujiya & Miyagi have a home on The Suite Delight.

Pacewon

This year was as good a time as any to revisit and rediscover Pacewon . I am thrilled Twitter provides a means for him to know when I played his music on my show.

Koncept

Koncept couldn’t have chosen a better time to supply me with tracks. I thanked him and told him to wait for news from me shortly. Brown Bag Allstars will always have a home on The Suite Delight.

Scott Hardkiss

Scott Hardkiss is another name I learned of during my time as RPM Director. Last year he was busy releasing numerous EPs and singles. I did a little research to learn the name is somewhat legendary among electronic music circles. I’ve since kept my eyes and ears open for anything related to him and his label.

Switchstance Recordings/Ancient Astronauts

They too are another name I learned since my return to CJLO about 5 years ago. As mentioned on a previous blog post, they have the distinct honor of being the last group I saw chart at #1 prior to my resignation. That hasn’t stopped me from playing their music on The Suite Delight, as October 29 can prove.

Stones Throw

My goodness do I love me some Stones Throw ! I get giddy if and when I see the Stones Throw label. I’m just as giddy to include them among my followers.

Underground Realroad

Prezzy from DPC Movements introduced me to Underground Realroad long before their album was released. I was pleasantly surprised their sounds were locally produced. I marvel at Drex’s production and Bricc’s delivery. I don’t know what’s going on but I’m at the (radio) station waiting the Realroad to pick me up again.

Preach Ankobia

Preach Ankobia is something like family to me in more ways than one. His affiliation and participation in the local hip hop scene is on the cusp of being recognized after years of dedication. That is the kind of work ethic I respect and admire.

Rico Blox

Rico Blox’s It's All Good was a surprise favourite of mine not too long ago. It ran the risk of being overplayed if I didn’t use discretion. I want to bring forth other tracks of his to upcoming show playlists.

DJ Brace

DJ Brace has managed to be in an elite class of artists closely affiliated with The Suite Delight. It’s safe to say that my show is his Montreal radio outlet for his production. I am just glad he is one of these distinguished artists on this list.

DJ Grouch

The numerous amounts of times I’ve come across DJ Grouch’s name on credits and 12” sleeves in the last few months is quite interesting. He’s been scratching on Canadian cuts for a good part of the decade. We might hear him do his thing on October 29.

Malicious

I’m proud of what Play Records has achieved in the last few years. I heard a song of hers called Attention Whore and nearly had to retire it for fear I’d kill it too much on The Suite Delight. Could it be she refers to me as well?

Neferiu Records

The packaging for Mantrakid’s Palmflowerblack caught my attention so much that I wanted to know more about him and his label. I discovered a world of hip hop music and production that I can't wait to unleash on The Suite Delight.

The Random Humans

I was introduced to the Western Canadian hip hop group The Random Humans last year and could introduce you to their music myself shortly. My research tells me they are touring with The Beatnuts as of now.

Upper Class

I have run into Cadence Weapon on many occasions and he is the first person I think of when I think of that label. With that said, he and other Upper Class artists/groups could make their way on the playlist that night.

Melanie Durrant

It is very easy to love Melanie Durrant. Around the time I returned to CJLO, I remember watching Muchvibe whenever I could and recording videos at any opportunity. I was happy to have gotten most of her videos but there was one that always eluded me. It was her Let Me (Remix) that I treated like a holy grail of music videos I wanted to capture. My determination paid off. I was able to catch the cutie’s coveted video. I’ve found a number of her 12” singles and added her Where I’m Going to my collection after years of searching. What I want to know is when I can hear more Melanie music.

aKido

The legacy of The Consortium, my most cooperative show while I was RPM Director, was they introduced me to aKido’s music. They played him so much that they were single-handedly responsible for the Gamechanger and Thearly Years EP doing as well as they did on the RPM chart. Through them I learned of his fabulous remix of Beggin’ and many more treats. aKido has since been one of the most viewed artists on The Suite Delight blog. I aim to catch a live performance sooner than later.

Empire Isis

A few years ago, I was watching what was known as CH14 here in Montreal and the video for Get Up On It aired. I liked the song enough to contact her and a guest appearance on my radio show soon followed. After three releases since then, Empire Isis is not showing any signs of slowing down.

The Tanuki Project

I was made aware of The Tanuki Project when their CD arrived at CJLO while I was RPM Director. Their sounds were well received by the DJs and the album charted for a number of weeks. I'm curious to know when the next Tanuki Project release will be available.

Rel!g!on

One night during an episode of The Suite Delight, I played all of the 3-4 tracks I had produced by Rel!g!on. Not too long afterwards, I got word he follows me on Twitter. I pray for more Rel!g!on music so that he can get word of my doing that again.

Bonjay

I had the pleasure of meeting Bonjay when they performed at Il Motore last year. They put a vinyl copy of Broughtupsy in my hands that night. Their album did very well on the RPM chart, making its way to #1. I recently played Creepin’ at the end of of our weekly Dansez Chez Vous mix sessions and got people open. I aim to play it for you on the show as well.

Shaun J. Miller

Fame Beatts & L.E.S. have made a great team and music for as long as I’ve known them. What I want to know and hear is what happens after Before The Genesis.

URBNET

I respect what URBNET has been doing for hip hop in Canada. Thankfully they like what I’ve been doing enough to follow me on Twitter.

Stereoboyz

Finding out they were following my Twitter was a surprise. I know little to nothing about the group but that won’t be the case for long. By following me, they’ve earned a potential place on an upcoming Suite Delight playlist.
The Boombap Cats

I've noticed that Johnny Illdigger and I meet at underground hip hop concerts or where records are sold. Great minds think alike. Thankfully he gave me a copy of Step In The Alley so that we can hear the underground hip hop he creates.

Public Transit Recordings

I’ve known Moonstarr’s name long before I met him. After learning he was making music and running a label in my neck of the woods, I supported his Archive, Ill Harmonics as well as the Sarah Linhares EP while serving as RPM Director. Regardless of the title I hold, Public Transit Recordings artists can and will be heard on The Suite Delight.

Method Man, Curren$y & Big Krit - Club Soda, October 20, 2011

As I type this, I am proud to announce that Method Man is now the single most popular hip hop artist of this blog.

The stats for my blog post about his 1994 debut album are climbing in leaps and bounds. It caused me to tweet he needs to drop an album like now and that my show & blog are officially his home. Expect to hear Method Man at least once a week on CJLO Saturday nights courtesy of moi.

If I were in Montreal that night, I would have gone to see him perform again like I did when he & Redman tore up Metropolis.

For those that have not caught a Method Man show, he's scheduled to be at Club Soda in a few days so go see him and crew on October 20.

The Suite Delight: Sarah Linhares Interview (October 29, 2011)

Public Transit Recordings artist Sarah Linhares has a new release, Messages From the Future, out right now.

This moment has been three years in the making and no one could be happier than Linhares. Proof of that was evident during the CD release party held on October 6 at Le Belmont. She was surrounded by supportive spectators and the album collaborators Moonstarr & Kenlo Craqnuques to name a few.

I was privileged to have attended and got to congratulate the songstress after her performance.

We will hear music from her new release as well from her personally during a live interview.

Dumbfoundead & DJ Zo Headline Beats From The East 2 Showcase (October 15, 2011)

As I was heading to CJLO to host my radio show, I caught sight of a flyer that stopped me in my tracks. The Beats From The East 2 concert is upon us and the flyer is proof positive.

Headlining is Dumbfoundead & DJ Zo, artists I was made aware of through DJ Mister Vee. He played Rapper O’s early upon his arrival at CJLO and the song has stuck with me since.

As I looked at the photo of Dumbfoundead on the flyer, I was thrilled to know that the man who played his song for me to hear is spearheading another Beats From The East extravaganza for Montreal to hear it among others that night.

This is Dumbfoundead & DJ Zo’s first Montreal performance ever. There is no better circumstance for Dumbfoundead to grace our soil than through this ground-breaking event.

Syleena Johnson - Underrated (2011)

I was destined to be a fan of Syleena Johnson from the moment I discovered whose daughter she is.

For me to have learned Syl Johnson has a daughter meant I had a second chance, if you will, to get even more soul from Syl’s family.

This blog should make it clear I have a weakness for talented, authentic female vocalists like Syleena Johnson. I had plans to have blogged about her earlier but when I got word she released a new album around this time, I figured there was no better time to put pencil to paper.

Underrated is Johnson’s 5th studio album and chance to get familiar with her music. I just got my hands on a copy and have already started adding it to The Suite Delight playlists.

She has been a champion in my eyes and ears for years and I finally get to stop asking when another of her albums would be available.
